This department and Social Development Canada were formed when the former department of Human Resources Development Canada was split into two departments.

The Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, The Minister of Labour and Housing and The Minister of State for Human Resources are responsible for this Department

The Department of Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) is responsible for providing all Canadians with the tools they need to thrive and prosper in the workplace and community. HRSD supports human capital development, labour market development and establishing a culture of lifelong learning for Canadians. HRSD provides federal-level management of labour and homelessness issues, individuals receiving Employment Insurance benefits, employers, employees, those who need focused support to participate in the workplace. and supports students through the Canada Student Loans Program.
