This department and  Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) were formed when the former department of Human Resources Development Canada was split into two departments.

The Minister of Social Development and The Minister of State for Families and Caregivers are responsible for this Department.

The Policy, Knowledge and Research Foundations Directorate (PKRF)

PKRF's mandate is to provide corporate leadership in the generation of the evidence-based foundation to support policy and program and service delivery decision-making in Social Development Canada. Research topics are indexed for Individuals, Businesses and Organizations.

Red Seal Program

The Interprovincial Standards (Red Seal) Program was established to provide greater mobility for skilled workers across Canada and provides a national occupational analysis, for each Red Seal trade.

Survey list

Sectoral/occupational studies draw on a number of sources for statistical data regarding economic and human resource issues. Most of the sources are national surveys conducted by Statistics Canada such as the Census. They span a range of issues from labour market activity to child care.
